Kaniv is a small town in central Ukraine surrounded by nature conservation areas. It is also a town where the Butter and Cheese Factory has been operating for over 50 years.

It is a picturesque place, so it demands picturesque illustrations. We decided to refer to the style of acknowledged village folk art painter Maria Prymachenko. Representative of naïve art, she embraced nature in her work. Her artworks take their roots in folk legends and fairy-tales, nourished by real life and culture of the Ukrainian people.

Unfortunately, the museum that housed Prymachenko’s paintings had been burned down by the Russian military at the beginning of the war against Ukraine. However, brave locals were able to save some of her work from the fire. And we are glad that many Ukrainians can still see Prymachenko-inspired packaging on the shelves of supermarkets, even during the war. We hope they are encouraged to search for the source.

But style is never enough. Therefore, the inhabitants of the Kaniv Reserve, namely the Red Book species (black stork, white-tailed eagle, Dnipro feather grass, bear onion, white water lily, and more than ten plant groups in need of protection) became the heroes of the packaging.

Design of “Kaniv 1971” now tells a story of Ukrainian art and nature, of picturesque land, naïve painting, cliffs, floodplains and rare blooms. And we hope that style of Prymachenko highlights endangered species and emphasize the picturesque, natural and delicious origin of cheese.
